Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of parent management training (PMT) for mothers on self-injurious behaviors and depression of adolescent female suicide attempts in Kazerun city.
Materials and Methods: The research method was a semi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group. The statistical population included all female students aged 14-18 who attempted suicide along with their mothers who referred to the education and training counseling centers in Kazerun city. The research sample was 30 female students aged 14-18 who attempted suicide along with their mothers who were randomly assigned to two groups of 15 (experimental group and control group). The research instruments were structured clinical interviews, Beck Depression Inventory (Beck et al., 1996) and Sanson et al. Self-Harm Inventory (Sansone et al., 1994). The collected data were statistically analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance.
Findings: The results showed that parent management training for mothers had an effect on self-injurious behaviors and depression of teenage girls who attempted suicide in Kazerun city. As the results showed, parent management training had a greater effect on depression (P≥0.001).
Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that training for mothers can increase their awareness of the signs and possible causes of suicide and self-injurious behavior in teenagers. This awareness can help them identify the signs of psychological or behavioral crises in time and take action before the crisis reaches a dangerous level.
