Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare cognitive emotion regulation and response inhibition in children with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder and Sluggish Cognitive Tempo.
Method: The method of the present research was a causal-comparative description. The statistical population of the study included all primary school students in Ardabil city in the academic year 2022 and children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder who referred to the psychiatric clinic of Fatemi Hospital in Ardabil city. 57 children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder selected by Purposive sampling method. Also, 57 children with Sluggish Cognitive Tempo selected by Purposive sampling method from one of the primary schools in Ardabil city. Data were collected by the Go/ No Go test (1987) and Cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire. Data analysis was performed by SPSS software version 25 using a t-test for independent groups.
Results: The results showed that there is a significant difference between children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder and children with Sluggish Cognitive Tempo in cognitive emotion regulation and response inhibition (P<0/05). And children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder obtained lower scores in emotion regulation and response inhibition (P<0/05).
Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it can be said that children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder have lower levels of cognitive emotion regulation and response inhibition than children with Sluggish Cognitive Tempo. These findings reveal the need for physicians and psychotherapists to pay close attention to the psychological characteristics of these children at different levels of prevention and treatment
