Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of narrative exposure therapy on cognitive emotion regulation and academic self-efficacy in students who are victims of domestic violence.
Materials and methods: in an experimental method with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group, 28 students aged 12 to 15 years who were covered by non-governmental organizations supporting children and adolescents due to the lack of moral competence of their parents and based on a questionnaire Garnevsky & Kraiij(2006) cognitive regulation of emotion and academic self-efficacy ofJinkz & Morgan(1999), who were diagnosed with emotional disorder and weak feeling of academic self-efficacy, were selected in an available and voluntary manner. These people were randomly assigned to two control and experimental groups of 14 people. The experimental group underwent narrative exposure therapy intervention for 8 sessions, and the control group did not receive any intervention. Both groups completed the questionnaires before and after the intervention. Data were processed using one-way analysis of covariance.
Results: The findings showed that narrative exposure therapy has a significant effect on improving emotion regulation (F=18.15 and P=0.001) and increasing academic self-efficacy (F=7.63 and P=0.001) in the research sample.
Conclusion: Based on this, it can be concluded that narrative exposure therapy is an effective method in the cognitive regulation of emotion as well as increasing the sense of academic self-efficacy in students who are victims of domestic violence.
