Abstract

Aim: Historic urban fabrics are an important part of the cultural and social identity of cities and play a significant role in sustainable urban development. Schools located within these areas can contribute not only to education but also to urban vitality, social interaction, and spatial justice.
Methods: This study evaluates the role of schools located in the historic urban fabric of Ardabil in promoting sustainable urban development, with emphasis on vibrancy and spatial justice indicators. The research uses a descriptive–analytical method, and data were collected through document analysis, field observations, and questionnaires. Indicators of urban vibrancy, such as social interaction, activity diversity, safety, and presence of people, as well as spatial justice indicators including equitable access to educational services, were analyzed.
Results: The findings show that schools in Ardabil’s historic areas can act as local social centers that enhance the vitality of surrounding urban spaces and strengthen residents’ sense of belonging. However, limitations such as lack of adequate public spaces and unequal access to facilities may affect spatial justice.
Conclusion: The study suggests that improving public spaces around schools and enhancing access to educational services can strengthen the role of schools in supporting vitality and sustainable development in Ardabil’s historic urban fabric.
