Objective: Academic anxiety is one of the most prevalent psychological challenges during adolescence that can significantly impair students’ academic performance, motivation, and mental health, particularly among girls. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of academic anxiety and its components among female upper-secondary school students in Ardabil City.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional (survey) study was conducted on all female upper-secondary school students in Ardabil City during the 2024–2025 academic year. A sample of 360 students was selected using a multi-stage cluster sampling method. Data were collected using the Academic Anxiety Test (AAT). The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, frequency, and percentage) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) in SPSS software (version 26).
Results: The findings revealed that the overall mean score of academic anxiety among female students was higher than the theoretical midpoint of the test, with a significant proportion of participants (38.5%) reporting moderate to severe levels of academic anxiety. Among the components of academic anxiety, the highest mean score belonged to test anxiety / fear of negative evaluation, whereas the lowest mean was associated with learning/assignment anxiety. Furthermore, a significant difference was observed in academic anxiety across different grades and study disciplines, such that 12th-grade students and those in experimental sciences/mathematics tracks experienced higher levels of anxiety ().
Conclusion: The study findings highlight a remarkable prevalence of academic anxiety among female high school students. Academic evaluation pressures play a prominent role in exacerbating this condition; therefore, designing and implementing school-based psychological interventions focused on emotion regulation, stress management skills, and raising awareness among parents and school staff are of paramount necessity to alleviate students’ psychological burden.
