Background and Objective: The loss of a child to cancer is one of the most traumatic experiences for parents, particularly mothers, which often leads to the development of complicated grief symptoms. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Grief Therapy on complicated grief symptoms among mothers of students deceased due to cancer.
Methods: This study utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. The target population comprised all bereaved mothers of students with cancer during 2024 and the first quarter of 2025. A sample of 30 mothers was selected via purposive sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group () and a control group (n=15n=15). The experimental group underwent 12 sixty-minute sessions of Cognitive-Behavioral Grief Therapy based on the protocol of Kumischke-Konrup et al. (2024), while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Complicated Grief Inventory and analyzed via Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) in SPSS.
Results: The results indicated a statistically significant difference in complicated grief symptoms between the experimental and control groups at the post-test stage (P<0.001P < 0.001). Cognitive-Behavioral Grief Therapy significantly reduced the symptoms of complicated grief in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Cognitive-Behavioral Grief Therapy is an effective and structured intervention for alleviating complicated grief symptoms in bereaved mothers. It is recommended that clinical psychologists and oncology counselors utilize this therapeutic protocol to support bereaved parents.
